125,000 Items, A Fraction of Them Online

McGuckin Hardware, a retail customer of Orgill Inc., the world’s largest independent hardlines distributor, has been a Boulder staple since 1955, growing into a 56,000-square-foot store with 125,000 in-store items ranging from plumbing and HVAC to camping equipment and home décor.

McGuckin had offered online shopping for nearly 10 years, but their original eCommerce platform carried less than a third of their in-store items and prevented them from adding products and functionality. Looking to enhance their online storefront as they had their Boulder store, Technical Operations Manager Bill Harrison reached out to Orgill and Unilog for help.

80,000 Enriched Products, Maintained Daily

Through Orgill’s Integrated eCommerce program, McGuckin gained a cloud-based eCommerce solution and access to the Orgill Industry PIM—a massive catalog of enriched product data, both powered by Unilog. The platform unified McGuckin’s sales channels and created an online experience mirroring their store, with a virtual endless aisle of products.

As McGuckin prepared to launch in early 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak hit. After a patched-together curbside pickup option on their legacy site became instantly popular, they asked Orgill and Unilog to build curbside pickup into the new site just before go-live—which pushed the launch back by only a week. The platform also integrated with McGuckin’s existing ERP, Epicor Eagle, to display real-time pricing and availability and automate order processing.

Bigger Baskets, Online and In Store

With the launch of the new McGuckin.com, online shoppers can now choose from 80,000 enriched products—nearly 95% of McGuckin’s in-store items and more than double the previous catalog—maintained and updated by Unilog daily. The retailer also added expanded pickup and delivery options, a new mobile app, an Instaply messaging platform, and a “McGuckin Rewards” loyalty program that has drawn nearly 80,000 members.

In the first month, web traffic more than doubled and web sales jumped 1,320% compared to the year prior; nearly a year later, web sales remained well over 1,000% higher. In-store average order value rose 23% despite a 16% decline in customer count, and online average order value grew 34%.
